Fast read with great unforeseen twists. Careful plot set in breadth of contexts . Very plausible and pleasantly droll. Recommended
The carer is Mandy, who is looking after the 85-year-old James Wentworth, a widower living in a Cotswold village, once a physics professor of international reputation and an OBE, who can no longer look after himself. Mandy is employed by James’ children, both in their sixties: Robert, who had lost his job in the City, lives in Wimbledon and is writing a novel; and Phoebe, a not very successful painter who lives in the village of “Knockton†in Wales. (Knockton figures in Moggach’s earlier novel, “Heartbreak Hotelâ€. The hotel and its owner, Buffy, also appear in this novel.)Mandy is fat, jolly, chatty, “speaks as she findsâ€, ministers efficiently to all James’ needs, is very familiar with him, cheers the morose old man up enormously, regales him with the local village gossip she quickly learns, and even gets him interested in television soaps, scratch cards, and outings to shopping centres. She is obviously a godsend to Robert and Phoebe, who initially fought down the slight resentment they felt at the way Mandy had taken over their father’s life.We learn a good deal about Robert and Phoebe, who have both suffered from their parents’ neglect when they were children and have never got over it. They have squabbled a lot; but Robert has a great sense of inferiority, not only towards his sister, but also towards his still glamorous wife Farida, a television news reader, who looks down on her husband, especially after he had lost his City job.Like Robert, Phoebe is also unhappy. She had had an extremely short marriage, but has been quite promiscuous, and even now, aged 60, has strong sexual urges. She resorted to internet dating, and has a sexual but loveless affaire with Torren, an aged hippy, who is into drugs, is also promiscuous and living in a home-made cabin in a wood nearby. (Moggach’s characterizations are, as ever, superb; but this is one relationship in the book I found hard to believe in.)There were all sorts of little incidents that made Robert and Phoebe feel suspicious of Mandy’s activities, intentions and control over their father.And then, two-thirds through the book, they make a shattering and totally unexpected discovery. In all fiction, I don’t think I have ever come across anything like it for impact. But I must not reveal what it is, and so cannot say anything about the last third of the book which follows from that discovery, except that long-kept secrets are revealed; and that the story is also taken forward, with some more surprises.A terrific read.
